Thursday music: Grim Grinning Ghosts (The Screaming Song)

If you would like to join our jamboree, there's a simple rule that's compulsory: mortals pay a token fee.

This song was not randomly selected since it's finally October!  I want to focus on Halloween songs!  And since I just got back from Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland, I figured I should start with the classic Grim Grinning Ghosts!

This is the featured song from the attraction Haunted Mansion located in New Orleans Square at Disneyland.  It's a really fun song about, well, ghosts!  But it's not a scary song.  Not really.  It's pretty upbeat, and the lyrics are...happy.  I don't really know how else to describe them!  The lyrics describe ghosts that are having a good time dancing and "socializing."

There are several versions of this song.  The one featured in the ride is a sort of barbershop version and quite rapid.  I also really like that one, but my favorite version is the one that features Thurl Ravenscroft singing solo.  He is the lead singer in the version featured in the actual ride, but I love hearing him alone because he has such an impressive voice and range.

The title was apparently taken from a Shakespeare poem.  Well, isn't that just special?

There aren't very many Halloween songs out there, so a great song like this is simply a must for this awesome holiday!

This sing-along video is quite old.  I remember watching it when I was a kid!  Also, the ride has been updated significantly since this video with much better special effects.  Of course, when I was there just two days ago, it was the Nightmare Before Christmas version rather than the originalI like the Nightmare version, but I like the original version more.  Unfortunately, we pretty much always visit the park in September or October, so I haven't seen the original version in a long time.  :/

Donald Duck in the ghost costume is too funny!

When the crypt doors creak and the tombstones quake,
Spooks come out for a swingin' wake.
Happy haunts materialize and begin to vocalize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!

Now, don't close your eyes and don't try to hide
Or a silly spook may sit by your side.
Shrouded in a daft disguise, they pretend to terrorize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!

When you hear the knell of a requiem bell,
Weird glows gleam where spirits dwell.
Restless bones etherealize, rise as spooks of every size.

As the moon climbs high o'er the dead oak tree,
Spooks arrive for the midnight spree.
Creepy creeps with eerie eyes start to shriek and harmonize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!

So, hurry back, we would like your company!
